Barbudo – Magnolia Mansion (2020)

Portsmouth duo, Barbudo, make the middle of the winter feel like summer with their latest track ‘Magnolia Mansion’. The song exudes energy and funk. It is one to get up and dance to. An addictive, elastic baseline and sultry vocals take inspiration from 1970s disco hits as the listener is left wondering, where is this Magnolia Mansion? And how can I get there right now?

Barbudo’s Ben and Harry Stanworth, the brothers that make up the band, have created quite an ear-worm with their latest release. The dreamy song was put out in October of last year and feels like taking a dive into cold water on a hot summer’s day. It’s refreshing and sun-soaked, evoking visions of warmer months. The song takes you back to a time of gigs, holidays, festivals and gatherings with friends.

A carefree vibe and upbeat tempo seep through ‘Magnolia Mansion’ as Barbudo sing about the end of spring in celebratory fashion. The mood and sound of the song is characterised by the line, “summer looms, so don’t be late.” Helping form the groove are steadfast beats and a stand-out guitar solo which bites through smooth melodies and sweet backing vocals. All musical elements harmoniously build into a warm crescendo during the song’s zenith, which swells and crashes like an ocean wave. The tune then ends with the refrain, “I’ll take you down.” Those words are echoed a few times before meeting with a final catchy chorus and aural visions of the mysterious ‘Magnolia Mansion’.
