Coral Palms – Drink Too Much (2021)

With influences ranging from Quincy Jones to David Bowie and Foals, UK-based Coral Palms capture the sound of the moment in their intimate music. While their discography dates back to the beginning of this year (or that’s what they have on Spotify), the new group is a bright spark in an indie-pop scene. Alright, I know I’m already singing their praises, but Coral Palms really do have praises to be sung – does that make sense? Featured in Rolling Stone, Earmilk, Existential Magazine, Edgar Allan Poets and Indie Music Center, it seems we are not the only ones enjoying their music. The latest addition to the lads’ repertoire is ‘Drink Too Much’.

Hailing from Torquay but residing in London, the foursome can sweep you away to a happy place with their soothing sound. Beautifully textured, each element in the song has prominence before merging together in a languid single. What I find intriguing is how each band member showcases their natural musical talent but also harmonises elegantly with the other instrumentation. This multi-faceted melodic experimentalism moving from alternative rock to indie-pop with ease. Can we say sophisticated?

The melody has a degree of depth in its arrangement and originality, but it is the lyricism that shows maturity. While a laidback single with chilled summer vibes, ‘Drink Too Much’ looks at “the night before”. Punctuated with nostalgic joy, the lads take a personal stance singing of experiences experienced, mistakes made and the “oh, bloody hell what happened” feeling in the morning.

Ollie and Will explain that “a lot of the themes in our lyrics revolve around youthful disarray, angst and, of course, romance, but musically we really just wanted to make tunes that we know we’d bop to at festivals or at a party…” Teetering on that delicate line between childish innocence and weighty responsibility, ‘Drink Too Much’ is a wistful single with an insightful nature.

In addition to their single, Coral Palms released a stripped-back version of ‘Drink Too Much’. Take a listen below:
