Derek Lee Goodreid – Born To Raise Hell & Sing The Blues (2022)

Inspired by life experiences, both good and bad, Australian rocker Derek Lee Goodreid hopes to empower people with his hard-hitting music. Not one to be pigeon-holed, Goodreid’s sound is a melting pot of genres from punk to rockabilly and blues. Featured in Rising Artists Music Blog, Rock Era Magazine, Sinusoidal Music, Find No Enemy, Paste Magazine and many more, Goodreid is reaching audiences on an international level. The latest addition to his critically acclaimed discography is ‘Born To Raise Hell & Sing The Blues’.

Following his 13-track album The Love, Derek Lee Goodreid showcases his natural musical talent in the single ‘Born To Raise Hell & Sing The Blues’. Recorded with upright bassist Stephen K. Donnelly and multi-instrumentalist Hector Ruana, the track has a strong blues taste to it. Yet, while there is a notable blues influence, Goodreid continues to highlight his diversity and versatility incorporating country and rock in the approximately three-minute-long song.

From the beginning, the lads send shivers down your spine with the electrifying guitar and pounding drums. Toe-tapping and head-bopping, the track has a light-hearted bounce about it despite the more profound lyricism. The underlying harmonica is particularly significant as it pushes that blues-inspired style we love so much.

I can easily sit back and listen to the melody and be content, but it is Goodreid’s emotive vocals that connect with audiences. Using a personal narrative, Goodreid shares his tale of how he was “born to raise hell and sing the blues”. Yet, while there appears to be a cheeky simplicity about the lyrics, the theme is far more profound in an iconic way. Goodreid explains that the infectious song is “…based around a Robert Johnson-esque crossroads theme where God, the Devil and Death all make an appearance in the protagonist’s legend.”

A testament to his versatility, innovation and all-around awesome skills, ‘Born To Raise Hell & Sing The Blues’ can grab you by the guts, shake you about and you’ll love it. I cannot wait for more from this interesting artist.
