HAWKNS – Head and Heart (2022)

Chasing our dreams is something that we are all urged to do, but this can often come with sacrifices and pain that we don’t expect. This is something that HAWKNS are fully aware of and weave into their single ‘Head and Heart’. With lyrics that touch on real moments from their lives, the band looks at pushing forward even when you feel like giving up.

Tackling the obstacles that we all face trying to achieve what we want, the band leaves us with a sense of hope. Brothers Ricky, Josh and Joe Frank have been playing music together for years before they began working at a local music studio and met singer Hawkins French. Knowing French’s raw vocals and their musical style would work perfectly together, the band was born.

‘Head and Heart’ rises into a burst of drums and guitars that have a wonderful indie rock flow to them. It is an engaging melody that tugs at your senses from the first notes of the single. There is a youthfulness to the music that is met by the maturity that comes with overcoming the obstacles that life has a way of throwing in your direction. The energy of the melody doesn’t let up for a second, letting you rock out to the track from start to finish. The riffs that take over the melody later are great and take the sound to a new level while making you want to turn the volume up. You can easily imagine this song blasting out through speakers while a crowd of people jump and going crazy to the music.

As the catchy melody gets you hooked to the single, French’s vocals bring an untamed blast of pop-rock. The lyrics tell a relatable tale of leaving things behind, while tapping into the band’s own story. This personal touch to the lyrics just makes the single more engaging and easier to connect with as the band lets you know you are not alone in the struggles you face. The chorus rises into a sing-along fest that you are going to be shouting to. Through French’s performance, you are filled with the feeling of wanting to push forward, while also edging toward giving up. The last moments of the lyrics give you the push to keep trying, while offering a glimmer of hope.

Using catchy rock melodics, HAWKNS fills you with hopeful energy while touching on the feeling of wanting to give up in ‘Head and Heart’. Through the bursting guitars and pumping energy of the music, they not only have you riding a sense of positivity but also hook you to their sound. The vocals from French are just as engaging as he pushes you forward through lyrics that carry a wonderful personal touch.
