DrewJam – Under The Surface (2026)

Praised for his “emotional depth, understated intensity and quiet strength”, singer-songwriter DrewJam effortlessly guides audiences through indie-rock melodies with an intimate ambience. Inspired by the likes of Sting, Coldplay and Snow Patrol, the UK-based musician inserts some retro flavour into his songs, but the timeless themes and issues in the songs allow DrewJam to connect with listeners across generations. His balancing of poetic storytelling with moving music is not only entertaining, but it is also rather engaging, sharing comfortable reflection in every second of sound. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Under The Surface’.

Following the well-received single ‘Ultraviolet’, ‘Under The Surface’ shifts from a classic rock stance to something lighter, but still brimming with the swagger of soft rock music. Produced by DrewJam and Max Hopwood, with mixing and mastering by Daniel James Short, ‘Under The Surface’ was recorded across home and studio sessions – something I find illustrated in the track’s innocent but mature sound. Sophisticated and polished, the acoustic and electric guitars swerve, soar and slice across the rock melody, while Ross Garner’s drums steadily anchor the tune, and DrewJam’s keyboards peep from the background.

Melodically, ‘Under The Surface’ is the song you have playing in the background on a weekend, the song you turn up on your drive home, the tune you land up humming and singing along to without even knowing the words. It’s unwavering, constant and fixed from the instruments to the vocals, and that’s a real comfort. Yet, within the rich, steadfast vocals, a fragile lilt exists, adding the imperfect perfection to an honest single.

More than a musical arrangement, ‘Under The Surface’ is simultaneously weighty with sounds and words. DrewJam explains that “the track explores themes of memory, perception, and emotional depth, balancing forward momentum with a more introspective core.”

So, what’s the overall opinion of ‘Under The Surface’? Sincere and heart-warming, it’s a single I could listen to continuously. With the mention of an upcoming album, I’m ready to hit the repeat button in anticipation of more DrewJam.
