Einsam – Stuck Pig (2021)

With his debut single ‘Pressing Matters’, Einsam took us on an exploration of the importance of touch. Now, he is taking a look at division both internal and external with his follow-up single ‘Stuck Pig’. Written between 2016 and 2020, the song has been shaped by the political and societal atmosphere which has changed in these four years.

Faced with the rising of intolerance and an increasing polarity across the European continent, Einsam turned that which divides us into music. Venturing further into the trip-hop heritage of his hometown Bristol, he mirrors inner turmoil and the collapse of ideals in society. While the world at large shaped part of the single, his own feelings of trying to make a new home in Vienna while being rooted to England bring their own edge to the music.

The warbling and vibrating tones that draw you into ‘Stuck Pig’ have a wonderful feeling to them. They float around in the background of the track as piano lines bring an acoustic edge to the music. The interplay between electronic and acoustic instrumentation on the track is excellently executed to create a sense of division and opposing forces. At times, they weave together to form a whole only to diverge and stand in stark contrast. This is a great sonic portrayal of the messaging of the track showing distinct sides to the music that both add their own elements to the whole.

As the elements in the melody counter each other, Einsam’s vocals are a middle ground that walks the divide. Through the lyrics, you can hear his personal turmoil and the issues he faced. However, there is a sense of something bigger in the lyrics as they expand outward to encompass everyone and everything. His performance has a great stability to it as he questions the divisions of life and the problems this can cause for us.

Einsam takes on the divisions in the world through melodic interplays and steady vocals in ‘Stick Pig’. His vocals are a steady middle ground that leads you through the intellectual aspects of the single while the melody creates a sonic portrayal of ideals coming together only to diverge.
