heyimmanic – i WANNA LOSE (2021)

Bringing together the sounds of Pentatonix and Convolk with the cheekiness of Billie Eilish, heyimmanic explores youthful angst in 2021 with his unique sound. The result of a meeting on Instagram (how 21st century can you get?), producer Arey and vocalist MANiC began a project of boundary-breaking proportions. Featured on RGM and several playlists, heyimmanic’s debut single ‘i WANNA LOSE’ is making the rounds. We have the joy of introducing you to this upcoming artist with his latest release.

Combining elements of emo, pop-punk and electropop beats, ‘i WANNA LOSE’ is a high-powered, somewhat upbeat single with a mature theme. Written around the time of his mother’s 15th death anniversary, ‘i WANNA LOSE’ is a blunt exploration of inner turmoil, conflict, desperation and addiction. MANiC shares that “the song highlights my struggles with grief and addiction”. Apparently performing with a congested voice after a night of binge-drinking, the track adopts a hazy listlisness in its cinematic soundscape.

What I find interesting in ‘i WANNA LOSE’ is not the melancholic lyricism or the effective execution in a flowing melodic arrangement. What is most interesting to me is the raw honesty in his personal narrative. It screams anger, despair and a heart-breaking helplessness. The whirlpool of sound is effective as heyimmanic places you directly in the mindset of a person lost and confused. Yet, while there is an insightful melancholy in the aggressive song, there is a quality of introspective empowerment.

According to MANiC, “this song helped me come out of a bender I was having and provided me with a lot of hope for myself…” Provocative and evocative, heyimmanic teeters on the delicate cusp between poignant innocence and utter hopelessness.
