Jeffrey Chan – Try (2020)

Are you on the lookout for a single that offers those retro 80s synth vibes with a modern flair? These sounds have been combined with heartfelt lyrics by Jeffrey Chan for his latest single ‘Try’. The track explores a retro soundscape, but washes it with something new and modern for a push against the boundaries of traditional pop ballads.

As the lead single off his upcoming EP, Chan gives you a taste of things to come. It is also his first co-production single with acclaimed producer Dibs. Coming off the back of his single ‘Glow’, he continues to explore the soundscape he introduced.

‘Try’ pulses into existence with some retro-tinged synths that meld with deep thumping beats. The beats get your head moving to them before synths zing past your head. There is a great pace to the melody that gets you into the vibe and makes your body move. The retro vibes continue throughout the single, but this is subtle and pulses in the background below the beats. The main thread of the melody is more modern and pushes the boundaries of electronic pop ballads. There is a good dash of dance vibes in the lower levels of the melody that really hook your brain.

Over the moving beats of the melody rest Chan’s vocals. His deep voice is a stable platform against the pulsing of the melody. As you walk down his vocals, he fills you with the emotions of the lyrics. Through his performance, you are lifted up and asked to take a chance. The chorus has a catchy flow that makes you want to sing along.

Jeffrey Chan pulses a mixture of retro synths and modern flair through your brain while asking you to take a chance in ‘Try’. The pulsing melody pushes the boundaries of traditional electronic pop ballads while his vocals offer a sense of stability. Through the vocals, you are encouraged to take a chance while getting lost in the music.
