Jodi Heights – White Knight (2022)

Compared to the likes of Tori Amos, Fiona Apple, Sara Bareilles and Regina Spektor, it is no surprise that Jodi Heights is passionate, intense and haunting. Bringing classical vocal training to contemporary folk meets pop, Heights introduces audiences to a new breed of music. Captivating listeners and critics on an international scale, Heights’ coverage ranges from Portugal’s Roadie Music to the UK’s Sinusoidal Music and France’s Indiechronique. The latest addition to her critically acclaimed repertoire is ‘White Knight’.

Inspired by fan art from an 11-year-old gig-goer, ‘White Knight’ uses the imagery of a fire-breathing dragon to create an empowering folk song. Heights explains that while the song may have been inspired by fan art, “as I wrote, it reminded me of my own inner strength in the face of challenges…’White Knight’ reminds listeners that if you’ve been looking for someone to save you, you are the warrior you’ve been waiting for.”

Profound and poignant, the positive lyricism of ‘White Knight’ enhances a deeper connection with audiences; however, it is the flowing melody that makes the song soul-stirring. Combining pounding drums with dynamic guitars and her signature piano, ‘White Knight’ has a flowing arrangement with an underlying sense of power. A wide vocal range intertwines haunting, wistful high notes with the strong foundation of a lower octave. Ethereal and whimsical, the track reaches out into a simplistic soundscape with an elegantly kaleidoscopic style.

In my mind, Jodi Heights is a shining star in a stagnating music industry. Folk, pop and rock can all merge into one mishmash, but Heights draws out the distinctive elements while still whirling about in a genre-defying design. ‘White Knight’ is the ultimate self-empowerment song oozing determination, courage and a hard-hitting “in your face” attitude. I cannot wait to see what else Heights has in store.
