Koalra – Everything We Had (2022)

Koalra has had us hooked to their indie-rock punk style since their hard-hitting track ‘Dear Daylight’, which led us through various releases to the ebb and flow of ‘Torture’. The foursome is now back with ‘Everything We Had’ which combines their usual style with some hypnotic drones. While they dip their toes into some experimental tones, the band considers the aftermath of a fire that burns everything we have.

With a thrust of industrial tones and howling synths, the band brings the feeling of uncertainty that comes once the dust has settled after a major event. The theme of this track taps into the overall concept of their new album. Bringing kraut-rock sensibilities to their sound, they leave you eager to hear what else their new album has in store.

The rather industrial tones that fill the opening of ‘Everything We Had’ leads you into the rock roll of the drums. There is an infectious movement to the drums that make you want to air drum along with them. The guitars have a slight distortion to them that walks the line between kraut-rock and industrial tone. While you are rocking out to the drum movement, the keys thread between the beats, bringing an almost shoegaze vibe with them. The different styles and sounds that fill the melody have been perfectly balanced allowing each to shine, but come together for a captivating movement. Through all this, you feel the light tug of psychedelic tones while the drums continuously shake you up from the inside out, filling you with a running energy. The single is rather long at 10 minutes, but the energy of the music keeps you hooked from the first drum rolls to the guitars that bubble in the bridge.

While the melody fills the soundscape with its blended sound, the vocals beckon you toward them with a post-punk vibe. They reach through the music to tap you on the shoulder and guide you to where they want you to go. As the melody brings its energy to your sense, the vocals offer a touch of uncertainty. You can hear the urge to rebuild after a major event, but this is tempered with the understanding that things might go wrong again. It is a deep lyrical movement that rises on the soar of the vocals that comes and goes throughout the single.

Koalra blend different rock genres with industrial tones and post-punk vocals for the energy-filled yet uncertain emotions of ‘Everything We Had’. The music keeps you hooked from the first almost industrial tone through the instrumental bridge to the very end. The vocals bring a feeling of uncertainty to the single while beckoning you further into the track.
