Near Death Experience – Everything (2021)

I might compare Near Death Experience (NDX) with iconic funk-rock bands like Grand Funk Railroad or Wild Cherry; however, this wouldn’t be doing anyone justice. With a sound completely unique, NDX drags the attitude of 70s funk to the 21st century with a tinge of alternative rock in the mix. Hailing from Ealing, London, NDX was founded in 2016 by four lads looking to combine soul, blues, rock and funk into one explosive listening experience – something everyone can enjoy.

Since the release of their debut EP The Last Summer in 2017, NDX has featured on BBC Introducing, Talk About Pop Music, FV Music Blog, Ealing Today and several radio stations – just to name some coverage. Moreover, the energetic foursome has performed at notable festivals like Glastonbury in 2017 and the Ealing Oxjam Festival in 2019. The latest addition to their notable discography is the single ‘Everything’.

The follow-up to their well-received singles ‘Conquer’, ‘Moves’ and ‘Lord’, ‘Everything’ is an infectious earworm that sticks in your head long after the song stops. Merging a soaring lead guitar with chilled drumming and the smooth underlying bass, NDX’s new single seems to cradle you in the warmth of a funk-filled comfort blanket. When you add Ian Whiteling’s gruff vocals, well that’s when you start feeling some goosebumps on your arms.

Touching on issues of freedom and unlimited possibilities, ‘Everything’ has a degree of empowerment; however, Near Death Experience showcase another melancholic side noting the fragility of inescapable circumstances. The darker lyricism juxtaposes the upbeat, uplifting melody demonstrating how NDX is more than just a funk band to make you feel good – they have depth. Not only that, the silky smoothness of Whiteling’s throaty vocals enhances the poignancy and buoyancy of the track.

Beguiling, emotive and compelling with a bit of sensual streak, ‘Everything’ can effortlessly captivate your mind and leave you shivering from its true awesomeness!
