ODEONS – Allowed To Fall (2021)

Merging elements of classic rock, grunge and electronic pop, Finish duo ODEONS are breeding a new type of music for the masses. Officially formed in 2013, Mikko Jaakkola and Pati began breaking through with a distinct guitar-based style; however, it was only in 2020 that the pair decided to collaborate with musicians from across the globe. Grabbing the attention of music industry professionals across the globe, ODEONS are placing a distinctive stamp on stagnating scenes. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Allowed To Fall’.

Unlike the pop-inspired single ‘Hush Hush’, ‘Allowed To Fall’ takes a heavier, more intense stance. A guitar-driven track, ‘Allowed To Fall’ showcases ODEONS’ innovativeness in transitioning from powerful guitar riffs to simplistic basslines carrying you along a river of sound. Of course, it is not only the guitars that make the single; the pounding drums are a foundation for inspired crescendos and diminuendos. An interspersed keyboard adds some fairy dust in the background adding a softer edge to the hard-hitting track.

At first glance, the ear-splitting melody roars through your soul and incites a need to jump about in a mosh pit; however, the emotional lyricism adds tenderness to the forceful tune. Dedicated to their talented co-writer and collaborator, ‘Allowed To Fall’ is significant to the duo and the delicacy of this tribute can be felt even if the project was based on a previous demo. What I find most intriguing is the harmonic intertwining of sensitive lyricism and edgy hard rock instrumentation…an almost flowing collision of heartfelt and heart-pounding qualities.

What makes ‘Allowed To Fall’ soul-stirring is not the pulsating guitars, rich vocals or melancholic lyricism, but its core message. Introspective and reflective, ODEONS touch on the sensitivity and fragility of the human spirit. Instead of meeting the need for perfection, competence and never losing control, ODEONS tell us that it is normal to fall over and make mistakes. Imperfection is part of life and everyone is allowed to fall.

In addition to their single, ODEONS have released an official music video for ‘Allowed To Fall’. Due to the strobe effects, which can cause seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy, I was unable to view it. You can view it below.
