Smoke Spider – Linger In My Memory (2022)

Founded in 2021, although the band members knew each other from music scenes in the 1990s, Smoke Spider is a duo with an eclectic sound. Merging elements of metal, punk and alternative rock, one can imagine a heaviness to Smoke Spider’s music – you would be right. Featured in Sinusoidal Music, The Punk Head, Info Music and various playlists, the Swedish pair are turning heads across the globe. The latest addition to their well-received discography is ‘Linger In My Memory’.

The fifth release since their formation in 2021, ‘Linger In My Memory’ retains the signature Smoke Spider style. Heavy, hard-hitting and powerful, the track seeps into your soul while punching you in the gut. Following their single ‘The Damage Is Done’ (read our review here), ‘Linger In My Memory’ appears to have a more Guns ‘N’ Roses style. Softer, if you can call metal soft, the song carries you along a sonic river before tossing you into the tumultuous waves beneath.

Alright, so this journey of self-expressive music seems quite bumpy, but it is the brashness that makes it bold. Pounding drums and dynamic guitars flood the soundscape reaching out with their hard-hitting vibes. The thing is, while there is a forcefulness to ‘Linger In My Memory’, the theme has a strong sensitivity. Touching on forgetfulness and relief, the song opens with a haziness underlying the hard rock style. Yet, the build-up into abrupt metal expertly reflects the deeper issue of discomfort and difficult emotions. As the duo explain, ‘Linger In My Memory’ revolves around “…forgetfulness being the solution to uncomfortable situations…due to stuff and persons lingering a little bit too long in your memory.”
