Tahj Mills – Happy Birthday (Fine Wine) (2026)

Eagerly celebrating life with all its griefs and glories, singer-songwriter Tahj Mills might be relatively new to the scene, but his work is by no means naive. Sauntering through the realms of hip-hop and R&B, and don’t forget the hint of pop lingering in his melodies, the UK-based musician reaches audiences of different tastes. Alright, no rock may be wafting in his sound. Still, the personal experiences woven into the tunes resonate with listeners on a deeper level, offering understanding, acceptance, and that “so, I’m not the only one who thinks that” feeling to our ears. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Happy Birthday (Fine Wine)’.

Following his singles ‘Drink & Drake’ and ‘Criticise (Criticize)’, Mills takes another step into 2026 with ‘Happy Birthday (Fine Wine)’. Produced at Birmingham’s BHX Studios by E.L.I. And Max, the track retains the hip-hop flavour of ‘Drink & Drake’, but it seems lighter, smoother, and has an old-school pop sleekness. Rather simplistic when it comes to the melody – bold beats walking across synths – there is a space that’s easy on the ears and brims with a cheeky brashness.

This is my introduction to Tahj Mills, but there’s a comforting familiarity in his warm beats. The hip-hop vibe sweeps across; however, it is the vocals that aren’t exactly a downfall but do showcase the newness of Mills. Rough, raw vocals can enhance the feel of a hip-hop or R&B song, but not in this case. It appears amateur, a bit off, and not quite right for the easier melody. Then again, this is only my opinion.

The melody has its rough edges and might be improved, but the message and inspiration of ‘Happy Birthday (Fine Wine)’ is heart-warming. Tahj Mills explains: “’Happy Birthday (Fine Wine)’ is a smooth, romantic R&B track celebrating timeless beauty, love and appreciation… The track serves as a reminder to cherish special moments and express gratitude for the presence of loved ones in our lives.”
