Thy Veils – Upstream (2023)

Beginning as a solo project headed by Daniel Dorobantu over two decades ago, Thy Veils is a “concept turned into style…” Noting that music is constant change, the evolution in technology and genres is clearly present in the sound of Thy Veils. As of 2022, the Romanian collective has self-produced seven studio albums, various singles, music for films, live recordings and video installations – all to critical acclaim. Featured in international press, Thy Veils has been described as “…a fantastic dreamlike journey” (Radio France), “pure tranquillity…” (Music Arena GH), and “…gorgeous sonic enterprise…” (Dancing About Architecture). The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Upstream’.

Following the well-received song ‘Influx’, ‘Upstream’ is Thy Veils’ first release in 2023. Entering the new year with a blast, ‘Upstream’ is a four-and-a-half minute package of pure serenity. Calming instrumentation belies haunting vocals sending dream pop-inspired shivers down your spine. Yet, while the signature Thy Veils’ dreamlike soundscape is evident, a slight art pop tone exists bringing a global music edginess to the single. Interestingly enough, there appears to be a soft rawness within a sophisticated arrangement.

Taken from their upcoming album, Next Forever, Thy Veils explore complex existential issues with ‘Upstream’; notably, the issue of inspiration. Touching on the core of inspiration, the band explains that “to answer such a question, exploration goes beyond one’s limit. Whenever you think you have reached your limit, inspiration is a few steps beyond – at the spring of cascade, where we transcend the self. It is at that point that the quest feels like a return home.” Sincere, sentimental and filled with hazy, wistful intonations, Thy Veils navigate the complex topic of inspiration with effortless simplicity.
