To The Helpless – So Long 2020 (2020)

2020 has been a long and tiresome year for most people, so why not end it on a good note? Step up punk rock band To The Helpless with their upbeat, infectious single ‘So Long 2020’. With their combination of alternative rock instrumentation and punk-rock lyricism, Madrid-based six-piece are placing a stamp on the music scene and people’s hearts. The latest addition to their well-received discography is ‘So Long 2020’.

Touching on the sociopolitical weaknesses experienced over the past 12 months, To The Helpless exposes the detrimental consequences of these deficiencies. Taking a stark look at insecurity, narcissism, materialism and hypocrisy, ‘So Long 2020’ elegantly traverses the fragility of modern society; however, there is a degree of irony in their engaging lyricism focusing on learning lessons instead of accepting societal faults.

“The song pokes fun at the fact that humankiind has been caught being a despicable species and how it has tried to turn that on its head to make itself look like the victim of 2020. All in all, it points out how we are desperately trying to turn the page on this year so we can continue to be our shitty selves instead of opting for a more mature and need self-introspection.” – To The Helpless on ‘So Long 2020’

Following their critically acclaimed EP The Fringes of Normality, ‘So Long 2020’ adopts a more upbeat and buoyant nature as compared to the heavily punk-influenced EP. While the new single is softer than their previous work embracing a more pop-rock design ala Good Charlotte, it retains the poignancy of existential themes. Combining fiery instrumentation with gruff vocals makes the single a hard-hitting, forceful song filled with raw passion.
