Tom Minor – Bureau of Change (2026)

Hot on the heels of his well-received album, Ten New Toe-Tappers For Shoplifting & Self-Mutilation, singer-songwriter Tom Minor stomps across our virtual desk once again with the single, ‘Bureau of Change’. Alright, maybe not stomping, but certainly walking with purpose, enticing us to follow him along the musical path. Join us, won’t you?

Produced by long-time collaborator Teaboy Palmer, ‘Bureau of Change’ is a just under four-minute rush of constant melodic change. Indie-rock shifts to two-tone, moving toward tango, shifting to bolero and all the way back in one sitting; quite something, hey? Performed entirely by Minor, there aren’t necessarily any crashing or thrashing instruments, but the arrangement has deliberate, heart-punching beats throughout. The drums sway from pulsating hits to a steady backline, all with an almost anchoring tone. A gallant guitar soars across, while a bold bass travels along the wave of sound. An organ or keys peep from the background, inserting further obscurity and off-kilter edginess to ‘Bureau of Change’.

Covered with a demure veil of Britpop, ‘Bureau of Change’ has the nostalgic tinge of Supergrass and Pulp, but with that ska flavour weaving across the melody. Change, yes, a constant change of style, feeling and tone; however, still retaining familiarity, surety and consistency in its oddness. I wouldn’t say the track’s melodramatic or theatrical, but there is a vibrance in the vocal execution, lending to a memorable brush of music.

Known for his emotional take on life with its grit, glory, tragedy, and triumph on display, ‘Bureau of Change’ follows from Minor’s single ‘Change It!’. The track does not simply continue or retain the theme of ‘Change It!’ but has you sit back, think and consider the intricacies of facing change. Yes, things need to change, and they can be the better for it, but what about the “short-changing” along the way? The way this bureau sees things is as “the short-changing disguised as progress shoved down our throats by the oligarchical uber-powers that be…” Not a pleasant concept, is it? Hey, it’s there, and Minor unpacks everything with a cheeky “yeah, that’s what’s going on and we shouldn’t really accept it” attitude.
