Tori Boltwood – Stay on the Moon (2022)

With her single ‘Fame’, Tori Boltwood called out the harmful elements of the music industry, before bringing a splash of rock to her pop sounds in ‘Con Artist’. She is now bringing a new sound to our ears with ‘Stay on the Moon’. The single has the feeling of a sci-fi movie as it draws you into the vastness of space and the mists of a nebula.

Woven into this cosmic feeling is a cinematic vibe which is complemented by the metaphoric lyrics that are a journey all on their own. Through the single, Boltwood takes the difficult situations in our lives and takes a step back while letting us know we are not alone. Highlighting the continued evolution of her sound, the single showcases a new side of Boltwood, while sticking to the catchy flows she has shown before.

The opening notes of ‘Stay on the Moon’ brings the cosmic touch of the track to life. The delicate reaching feeling of the opening notes is like the endless expanse of stars stretching as far as the eye can see. The electronic notes that come and go through the single enhance the space feeling. Beneath these tones is a solid indie-pop flow that sweeps through you and makes you want to soak up every note. While there is an expansive feeling to the melody, there are also the glittering sparkles of the stars that bring a strange sense of comfort. As the single progresses, there is a building feeling to the melody that rises higher and higher like a rocket taking off into the cosmos.

While the melody sets the cosmic tone of the single, it is Boltwood’s vocals that provide the real body of the track. The lyrics use a combination of relatable emotions and space-related imagery to bring the message of the track to life. Her vocal performance is touching as she tries to consider how to save a relationship that has hit the rocks. There is an understanding that space may help ease the pain both people are feeling. This understanding is tempered by the turbulent emotions that come before a decision is made. While touching on this relationship, there is something bigger to the lyrics that is just waiting for us to find it.

Tori Boltwood has us soaring into the vast expanse of space through the cinematic and cosmic flairs of ‘Stay on the Moon’ while touching on relatable emotions. The music has you shooting off into space with glittering stars surrounding you. It is the vocals that bring the emotive hit of the track as they consider distance in a relationship and much more.
