Under Delusion – Burning Under Water (2023)

They say that knowledge comes with age as we learn from our experiences, and Under Delusion expresses gads of insight in their moving melodies. I’m not saying the members of Under Delusion are old; in fact, being in your thirties is the prime of your life. I am saying they have a penchant for reflecting on humanity offering understanding, escapism and solace in their music.

Influenced by the likes of Bring Me The Horizon, Royal Blood and Yonaka, Under Delusion can be defined as a rock group; but then again, not entirely. Slicking various flavours of rock in their music, the trio create a synth-filled, guitar-driven, hard-hitting “modern rock cocktail…standing out for a fresh approach to alternative rock.” We came across Under Delusion in 2021 with their single ‘Shame’. Since then, the UK-based trio has astounded us with ‘Awaken’, ‘Runaway’ and ‘Over The Rainbow’. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Burning Under Water’.

Taken from their upcoming sophomore album, ‘Burning Under Water’ follows the well-received single ‘Dive’. Adopting a heavier rock sound in ‘Burning Under Water’, Under Delusion combines pounding drums with scorching guitars in a hard-hitting sonic hurricane. A sliver of synths flutter through tinging the whirl of wind with fairy lights but the depth of hard rock despair stands firm.

Known for their ability to capture listeners in a melodic story, Under Delusion engulfs audiences with this melancholic single. Inspired by “a near-death experience at a depth of 30 metres in the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean”, the sense of angst, confusion and blind terror is perfectly represented in ‘Burning Under Water’. The swirling guitars and crashing drums express anguish but an enticing female vocal leads you into the belly of the beast with silvery delicacy. It holds you close letting you know that while the chaotic darkness of life’s struggles tear at you, you are not alone.
