SLAPPER – We Kept The night (2026)

Focusing on storytelling through sound, Bucharest-based musician SLAPPER aims to craft a place of solace, acceptance and narrative of renewal – a space for listeners to “…confront and embrace their own emotions, vulnerabilities and triumphs.” Despite this being my introduction to SLAPPER, the veteran DJ began blending synth-pop, electronica, and melodic techno back in the late 1990s. Over the years, he established himself as a notable figure in Bucharest; in 2017 (give or take), he took a break from the scene. Back in 2023, SLEPPER returned with more synth-wave tunes. Following his single, ‘The Break of Day’, SLAPPER (also known as Claudiu-Gabriel Tache) releases his third single of the year, ‘We Kept The Night’.

Self-composed, produced, recorded, and well, everything involved in creating the single, ‘We Kept The Night’ is reminiscent of the 1980s/early 1990s synth-pop scene. I find myself thinking of Pet Shop Boys – except ‘We Kept The Night’ is an instrumental track. Soft and soothing, gentle and languid, the single twinkles with glittering synths, a steady beat, and a shining keyboard-driven motif. Oddly enough, while the surface layer of this textured single appears to be synths on a loop, the layer beneath rises and falls with a heavier keyboard.

Considering the theme of the track – a night of connection between two beings – the distinction of each layer is a conversation taking place in a sonic haze. It’s two pieces matching, finding the sweet spot where every joyful emotion can be discovered. SLAPPER explains:

“The song is about moments that never really fade – nights filled with connection, light, and the feeling that time could stand still… The idea behind the track was simple – some nights don’t end. They stay with you, long after they’re gone.”

In addition to the single, SLAPPER released an official music video for ‘We Kept The Night’. You can view the video below and/or on his YouTube channel. Note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
