Racines – Market Miracolo (2026)

While heritage and culture can define us as unique individuals, they can also bind people together, finding similarities within the contrasts, creating a narrative that is as familiar as it is diverse. Racines is an example of this narrative in human and melodic form. The musical journey of Rokeya, a London-based Indo-Italian-Welsh artist, and Anissa, an Italian-Algerian, Racines offer a dialogue of traditional heritage through contemporary electronics. Born in 2022 from the meeting of Anissa and Rokeya, the female duo is, in their words, “…daughters of multiple cultures who… intertwine their musical souls to create the sound of Racines: ancestral, powerful, earthy, and eclectic, inspired by the lads facing south.”

Alongside the announcement of their upcoming album, Arilos Mennar, set for release in June 2026, Rokeya and Anissa join forces with producer Frencesco Brini on their debut single, ‘Market Miracolo’. Describing the track as “… the symbol of the market: a living, pulsating space made of cultures, languages and encounters”, ‘Market Miracolo’ can drag you into a brightly coloured Arabian market brimming with a vibrant shimmer of life from every shouting merchant to the people pushing past you in an eagerness to enjoy everything available. A palpable sense of vibrance and excitement oozes from every obscure, eclectic chord.

Lost in a swirling mess of sound, ‘Market Miracolo’ is, well, it’s a miracle of a melodic market. The bold percussion pulsates in the background, while Middle Eastern-flavoured vibes travel along the arrangement. For me, however, the leading, almost driving force is the vocals. Not experimental per se, but definitely something unconventional with swaying lilts entwined in an urgent frenzy.

Exciting and thrilling, ‘Market Miracolo’ added some spice to my dreary Monday afternoon. It’s chaotic in one way, but soothing and harmonic in another. It’s flavourful and bright, but also has a hidden tranquillity in its narrative. Fiery and confident, but calm and collected; a desire to run and dance, but also to sit back and enjoy.

An interesting introduction to what is undoubtedly one of the more exciting duos on the UK scene. If this is what Racines begins with, I am eager to hear their upcoming album. Brace yourselves, it’s going to be hell of a ride.
